Akathist to Venerable Job, Abbot and Wonderworker of Pochayiv

Kontakion 1

O venerable father Job, chosen wonderworker and good instructor of our land, earnest intercessor of the whole world: your monastery, which is illumined by your pure life, and all Orthodox Christians, offer up unto the Holy Trinity praises of thanksgiving for you. As one who has boldness before the Lord, be you a tireless intercessor for our souls and a speedy ally for those who do battle against the passions, that in the joy of our hearts we may cry unto you:

Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Ikos 1

An angelic herald has you truly been shown to be for our people who are assailed by the enemies of the Church, O Job our father, as much by your writings and the printing of sacred books as by your God-pleasing life and your glorious departure unto God; and now you do show yourself to the whole world as a fervent intercessor before the throne of the Master. Wherefore, we cry unto you:

Rejoice, good warrior of the true Church;
Rejoice, radiant beacon of Orthodoxy.
Rejoice, you who did protect our fathers from heresy;
Rejoice, you who has made their children steadfast in piety.
Rejoice, you who while yet a child did leave your parents’ house for the sake of salvation;
Rejoice, you who showed care for the soul more than others.
Rejoice, for your elders marvelled at the struggles of your childhood;
Rejoice, for from your angelic habit you were numbered with them.
Rejoice, you who illumined the Uhornitsky Monastery by your life;
Rejoice, you who made the Monastery of Dubno glorious by your manifold labors.
Rejoice, strengthening in the Faith for those who are weak;
Rejoice, admonishing of the ignorant.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 2

Seeing your zealous progress in the spiritual life, the monks of the Uhornitsky Monastery arranged that you become a schema-monk and a priest; and the land of Volynia, urging you on to your greatest labors, made you an abbot in the city of Dubno, to bring a halt to apostasy, for the spiritual nurturing of the Orthodox people, and that tireless chanting might be made unto the Lord: Alleluia.

Ikos 2

You did truly shown forth a perfect understanding, O father, when you did turn aside to the Mount of Pochayiv for tranquility of soul, and instead of leadership did give yourself again over to obedience; yet the Lord accounted it a higher struggle for you to receive the abbacy there, a second time; and the brethren of Pochayiv cried out to you with gladness:

Rejoice, O our new and all-wondrous father;
Rejoice, model of piety.
Rejoice, you who did accept the abbacy as an obedience;
Rejoice, you who did willingly enslave yourself to God and your neighbour.
Rejoice, for in your abbacy the likeness of Christ’s humility is revealed;
Rejoice, for therein is peace found for our souls.
Rejoice, you who did manfully array yourself against the demons.
Rejoice, you who did acquire a place in the choir of angels;
Rejoice, you who was shown to be a good guide unto salvation.
Rejoice, encouragement for those who are being saved;
Rejoice, reproof of the slothful.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 3

The power of the divine Spirit enriched you, O all-wise Job, when, upbraiding the thief who was stealing the monastery’s grain, you did straightway give him forgiveness and did give him that which he sought to steal, for the Sake of his repentance and to provide sustenance for his hungry body; for in doing this you did melt his stony heart and teach him to sing: Alleluia.

Ikos 3

Caring constantly for the soul, O venerable father, you did love to seclude yourself in a cave, where, spending days and nights in prayer, you did converse with the one God; wherefore, the light of His grace made the dark cave as radiant as Mount Tabor and has taught all to cry out to you:

Rejoice, ever-burning incense of prayer;
Rejoice, inexhaustible well of tears.
Rejoice, you who did emulate the recluses of the Kyiv Caves of old;
Rejoice, you who did acquire their gifts of grace.
Rejoice, for by your prayers you did strengthen the brethren in patience;
Rejoice, for you did drive the demons from the monastery with your sighs.
Rejoice, thou who didst summon the light of heaven to the gloomy cave;
Rejoice, you who has brought grace from the Lord into our passion-plagued souls.
Rejoice, adamantine diamond of the cliffs of Pochayiv;
Rejoice, all-glorious beacon of our whole country.
Rejoice, all-glorious pillar of the Universal Church;
Rejoice, refuge of all who pray.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 4

Desiring to dispel the tempest of the assaults of the heretics, you did attend the sacred council of the Orthodox in the divinely saved city of Kyiv, where you did boldly confess the unadulterated Faith and did exhort all the people to cleave unto it; wherefore, you did not cease to commit sacred books to print in the Monastery of Pochayiv, that all who read them might hold to the true Faith and chant unto God in Orthodox manner: Alleluia.

Ikos 4

The brethren of Pochayiv heard the unceasing prayer of Jesus uttered by your lips, O father Job, and beheld the tears which flowed from your eyes; and, edified by your instructive discourse, and moved to compunction by the example of your life, they said:

Rejoice, our all-good intercessor;
Rejoice, our meek teacher.
Rejoice, you who pour forth tears of grace;
Rejoice, you who moves our hearts to compunction.
Rejoice, for you do unceasingly offer spiritual sacrifice to the Lord;
Rejoice, for in your mind you do ever dwell upon the consolations of paradise.
Rejoice, emulator of the Forerunner in abstinence;
Rejoice, fellow zealot of Job the much-ailing in longsuffering.
Rejoice, you who did acquire the gifts of them both;
Rejoice, you who has been accounted worthy to serve with the angels.
Rejoice, feeder of the poor;
Rejoice, consoler of the sorrowful.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 5

You were like unto a divinely-guided star, O venerable one, traversing the land of Galicia and Volynia illumining all with the light of Orthodoxy, imparting an increased zeal to zealots of the Faith, rendering the hearts of the good steadfast in Orthodoxy, and ever moving the slothful to chant unto God: Alleluia.

Ikos 5

Monks and lay folk beheld the abbot of the Monastery of Pochayiv humbling himself by tilling the earth, planting trees and gathering manure, and they marvelled at him as at a second Saint John of Damascus; and they came to despise all the pride of heresy and rendered their souls steadfast in Orthodoxy, saying:

Rejoice, leader of the good struggle;
Rejoice, confirmation of the true Faith.
Rejoice, you who denounces the ungodly pride of the heretics;
Rejoice, you who exalts Orthodox humble-mindedness.
Rejoice, for through you have we come to recognize the beauty of piety;
Rejoice, for through you have we trampled down within ourselves the vain world.
Rejoice, goodly admonition for the rich of this world;
Rejoice, goodly consolation for those who are poor and those who toil.
Rejoice, you who did willingly take up the cross of privations for Christ;
Rejoice, you who enables us also to bear the same cross.
Rejoice, good servant of Christ God.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 6

As a preacher of the Orthodox Faith and piety throughout your whole life, O venerable Job, you did seal your life with your holy repose which you did foretell a week beforehand, which you were vouchsafed to receive after having communed of the Holy Mysteries without pain, in nowise regretting anything of this world, but desiring release and to be with Christ, that you might unceasingly chant the hymn of the Seraphim: Alleluia.

Ikos 6

Your dead body shone forth with splendid beauty, O venerable one, for as you did mortify it during your lifetime with fasting and labors, after your repose the Lord has glorified it with incorruption and a sweet fragrance, and has taught us to chant unto you:

Rejoice, you who has abode in the heavens;
Rejoice, advocate for the earth.
Rejoice, you who did have foreknowledge of your departure from among mortals;
Rejoice, you who was fervently gladdened thereby.
Rejoice, for you makes us steadfast in fearlessness in the face of death;
Rejoice, for you teach us to trust in the mercy of God.
Rejoice, you who reproves those who love this transitory life;
Rejoice, incorrupt witness in the flesh to the coming resurrection.
Rejoice, you who were zealous to crucify your flesh in this life;
Rejoice, you who has shown it to be fragrant after death.
Rejoice, manifest denouncer of the unbelieving;
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 7

Desiring to announce to the Church the incorruption of the relics of the venerable Job in a thrice-repeated dream God showed him to Metropolitan Dionysius as alive and announcing to him the will of God; and Dionysius, believing him, glorified the Almighty and His favored one with the hymn: Alleluia.

Ikos 7

The sacred council, with the monks and all the people, acknowledged you to be a new intercessor for the whole world and a wonderworker; and when Dionysius went to the Mount of Pochayiv and acquainted himself with your life, your precious body was taken up from the bosom of the earth incorrupt and full of sweet fragrance, pouring forth such miracles of healing that all cry out:

Rejoice, new and great wonderworker;
Rejoice, you who with all the saints has a share in the kingdom of heaven.
Rejoice, you who by your burial did sanctify the land of Volynia;
Rejoice, you who by the revealing of your relics has made us steadfast in Orthodoxy.
Rejoice, for through you the halt and the blind receive healing;
Rejoice, for the demons treble before your incorrupt body.
Rejoice, you who fills with compunction us who stand before your sepulcher;
Rejoice, you who moves us to desire salvation.
Rejoice, you who after death did appear to many as one living;
Rejoice, you who in your spirit has joined in fellowship with the heavenly powers.
Rejoice, well-spring of miracles;
Rejoice, our mighty ally against the demons.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 8

A strange and wondrous miracle did you show forth, O venerable Job, when, soon after your glorification, you did appear amid two angels, praying in the church of Pochayiv, and unto a certain maiden you gave a cloth full of myrrh to place upon the sores of the ailing Abbot Dositheus; and, receiving healing, he straightway fell down before your tomb, full of health, and chanting unto God: Alleluia.

Ikos 8

You have truly been the full protection and help of your monastery, O all-glorious Job, and the Orthodox people came to understand this when they beheld you in the sky, praying to the Theotokos for the salvation of the holy Lavra, of the monks and laymen, who were sorely besieged by the Moslem hordes; and who from that hour they chanted to you in joy:

Rejoice, O our omnipotent helper;
Rejoice, unassailable rampart of the holy monastery.
Rejoice, you who did repel the assaults of the Moslems;
Rejoice, you who turned their arrows back against their own heads.
Rejoice, for you did entreat the angelic hosts to appear and drive them away;
Rejoice, for you did then call many Moslems to Christ.
Rejoice, you who did transform warriors who had besieged the monastery into novices therein;
Rejoice, you who did put the incorrigible to flight.
Rejoice, shaming of audacity opposed to God;
Rejoice, crown of Christian patience.
Rejoice, you who do not disappoint the trust placed on you;
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 9

Dismissing all the apostasy and wavering in the Faith endured by the people and his monastery, by his own supplications the venerable Job returned the land of Volynia to Orthodoxy and therein now revere the holy shrine of Pochayiv as a most solid bulwark of the true Faith for the myriad people who have recourse to it, who venerate his relics with their lips and heart, and chant unto God: Alleluia.

Ikos 9

Orthodox hierarchs and the whole sacred council were shown to be proclaimers of your glory when your relics, which had been hidden from the apostates from Orthodoxy, were again borne into the holy church, while the Christians bowed down and said in gladness:

Rejoice, sun of Orthodox Volynia;
Rejoice, star of the true Church.
Rejoice, beam of righteousness who shone forth, the night having passed;
Rejoice, ray of light which dispelled the darkness of heresy.
Rejoice, you who in the new manifestation of your relics did again pour forth miracles;
Rejoice, you who did thereby utterly denounce apostasy from Orthodoxy.
Rejoice, for you have not ceased to fulfil the entreaties of the faithful;
Rejoice, for you did not dwell upon the offenses of our fathers.
Rejoice, you who teaches us to forgive our enemies;
Rejoice, you who makes us steadfast in longsuffering.
Rejoice, reproof of the faint-hearted;
Rejoice, forgiveness of the penitent.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 10

O venerable Job, be you now the mediator of our salvation, for the ungodly have introduced many corrupt practices in our land, and because of them our might has waned; yet in contrition of heart we fall down before your aid, and trusting in your intercession we cry out unto God: Alleluia.

Ikos 10

All throughout your life you were a firm rampart of the Orthodox Faith in the land of Volynia and Galicia, O venerable father, and even after your repose you did contend for the truth by your appearances and healings; and moreover you did also converse invisibly with the souls of your children, that all of us may cry out to you:

Rejoice, you who did fight for our salvation;
Rejoice, you who dispels wicked temptations.
Rejoice, you who for us has acquired boldness before the Lord;
Rejoice, you who has received from Him the grace of healings,
Rejoice, for today you abide in paradise with the angels;
Rejoice, for there you join chorus with the apostles and martyrs.
Rejoice, you who with them do intercede for the Church;
Rejoice, mediator of the loving kindness of God for us.
Rejoice, you who even during your life did love the repentant;
Rejoice, you who now do bear their supplications up like incense to the throne of heaven.
Rejoice, you who do hearken quickly unto all who pray to you;
Rejoice, protector of the lowly of heart.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 11

O favorite of God, accept you our hymn of thanksgiving offered unto you with pure love, like the widow’s mite, for our spiritual state is poverty in your sight, and we are unable to emulate you in good works; yet, offering up sighs of contrition for our sins, we are comforted by the glory of your virtues, chanting unto God: Alleluia.

Ikos 11

You were a beacon of the Orthodox Faith and a pillar of piety, O Job our father, in word, life, love, faith and purity; therein strengthen us by your prayers and drive far away from us all heresy and corrupt practices, that we may chant this hymn of thanksgiving:

Rejoice, elect of God;
Rejoice, conversor with angels.
Rejoice, you who in the spirit of your love has not withdrawn from us;
Rejoice, you who through your spirit do bestow benefactions upon us.

Rejoice, dispeller of spiritual sleep;
Rejoice, bestower of spiritual vigilance.
Rejoice, O Job, all-glorious favorite of God and adornment of the Monastery of Pochayiv!

Kontakion 12

The grace of unceasing prayer and disregard for the body, of spiritual joy and sympathy for one’s neighbor, did you acquire in abundance, O father Job; wherefore, by your almighty supplications make us, who are slothful and sinful, partakers thereof, that, delivered from the tyranny of the passions, we may chant unto God: Alleluia.

Ikos 12

Hymning your heaven, we beseech you, O venerable Job: By your supplication establish the Orthodox Faith in the land dear to you, defend and strengthen the whole Church of Christ on earth against unbelief and heresy, and spurn not these, our praises:

Rejoice, you who did share in the ministry of the apostles;
Rejoice, you who did love the struggles of the desert-dwellers.
Rejoice, goodly example of poverty of spirit;
Rejoice, you who did richly acquire spiritual tears.
Rejoice, for by your meekness you did bring the souls of thieves and malefactors to the Lord as a good inheritance;
Rejoice, for together with all who hungered and thirsted after righteousness you do now dine in the mansions of God.
Rejoice, you upon whom God has had mercy and has glorified with all the merciful;
Rejoice, you who now do gaze upon Him face to face with all the pure of heart.
Rejoice, you who looks down from the heavens upon us with love;
Rejoice, you who imparts help from the Lord to all who labor for Orthodoxy.
